Air Conditioners: Repair Vs. Replacement

Technician working on HVAC unit.

Knowing when to replace a home comfort system can be one of the most difficult decisions that homeowners have to make. No one wants to replace a system that could’ve run for a little longer with an affordable AC repair in Brockport. However, there may be other factors that a homeowner might not know about when making these decisions.

For example, it might not be worth repairing an AC system that has exceeded its lifespan. Sometimes an AC repair can be a “Band-Aid fix” that will only temporarily solve a problem on a system that is going to continue to run inefficiently even with the fix. So how do you know when to get that AC system repaired or replaced? We’re going to break it down for you in this blog so keep reading.

Average Lifespan of Air Conditioners, Heat Pumps, and Mini Splits

If you’re a homeowner, knowing the average lifespan of your HVAC equipment is vital. This is the top determining factor when it comes to deciding whether to replace or repair an AC system.

Central air conditioners, ducted heat pumps, and ductless mini splits have an average lifespan of 10-15 years. However, these lifespans only apply to systems that have received regular maintenance throughout their lifespans.

For central AC, that means annual tune-ups, and for heat pumps and mini-splits, that means twice-a-year tune-ups. Remove a couple of years from that estimate if your system has not received regular maintenance.

Factors to Consider When You Have a Repair Estimate

Here’s where knowing your system’s age comes into play. There are two rules that can help you determine when a repair estimate is worth paying for.

The first rule is the $5,000 rule. Multiply the age of the AC system by the estimated repair cost.

If the result is more than $5,000, it makes better financial sense to replace the system. If the result is less than $5,000, it’s probably best to repair it.

For example, if your AC is 8 years old and the repair cost is $700, 8 x $700 is $5600. In this scenario, a replacement is the better option.

The second rule is the 50% rule. If a repair estimate is 50% or more of the cost of replacing it, it’s generally more economical to replace the system.

When To Get a New Air Conditioner

In a nutshell, it’s recommended that you get a new air conditioner when it’s within that 10-15 year lifespan and is no longer running efficiently, isn’t keeping your home comfortable, and has needed repairs. A system that is older than 15 years should be replaced.

Air conditioners from even a decade ago are not nearly as efficient as today’s modern air conditioners. By upgrading your system, you’ll enjoy lower utility bills and greater home comfort. You also have more options to choose from than you did 10-15 years ago. A heat pump or a mini split might be a better solution for your current home or the makeup of your household.
